Pennsylvania American Water urges residents to be prepared during sub-freezing weather with the following tips to protect pipes during ongoing below-zero temperatures:
- KNOW HOW TO SHUT OFF YOUR WATER by locating and marking the main shut off value for quick location in an emergency
- TEST YOUR MAIN WATER SHUT OFF VALVE by closing and checking sinks to ensure the shut-off value is working properly
- CHECK SPRINKLER OR IRRIGATION SYSTEMS to make sure everything is turned off and fully drained
- ELIMINATE SOURCES OF COLD AIR NEAR WATER LINES such as crawl spaces, unheated rooms, basements, garages and exterior walls by insulating, plugging drafts around doors & windows
- PROTECT YOUR PIPES by wrapping exposed pipes with insulation or heat tape (even fabric or newspaper can help)
- KEEP WATER MOVING THROUGH THE PIPES when temperatures stay below freezing by allowing a small trickle of water to run
